Orange Sierra Leone Strengthens Community Bonds with Nationwide Jamah Sunakati Initiative During Ramadan

As the holy month of Ramadan continues to inspire acts of compassion, reflection, and unity, Orange Sierra Leone has reinforced its commitment to community engagement through a nationwide Jamah Sunakati (Iftar) initiative, bringing people together across Freetown and key provincial cities.

Ramadan, a sacred period observed by Muslims worldwide, is marked by fasting, prayer, charity, and a deep sense of spiritual renewal. It is also a time that emphasizes generosity, empathy, and togetherness values that resonate strongly within Sierra Leone’s diverse and closely knit society.

In this spirit, Orange Sierra Leone organized a series of Iftar gatherings at the Goderich Central Mosque and Comfortee School in Calaba Town, Freetown. The initiative was also extended to regional communities including Bo, Lunsar, Kabala, and Kono, ensuring that the message of unity and shared humanity reached across the country.

The events brought together community members, religious leaders, youth groups, and Orange Sierra Leone representatives in an atmosphere defined by warmth, gratitude, and mutual respect. As the call to prayer signalled the breaking of the fast, Muslims and Christians alike sat side by side to share meals an enduring reflection of Sierra Leone’s longstanding tradition of interfaith harmony.

Beyond the symbolic act of breaking the fast, the initiative embodied the deeper meaning of Ramadan serving others and strengthening bonds within communities. A notable highlight was the active involvement of Orange Sierra Leone’s leadership, including the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Marketing Officer, and staff members. Employees worked alongside local volunteers to prepare and serve meals, demonstrating a hands-on approach to community service that went beyond corporate responsibility.

For many attendees, the gesture carried profound significance.

“This gesture from Orange Sierra Leone means more than just a meal; it shows true partnership with the community. During Ramadan, such acts remind us that we are not alone—we are supported and valued,” said Alhaji Mohamed Jalloh, an elder at the Goderich Central Mosque.

Aminata Conteh, a resident of Calaba Town, echoed similar sentiments:

Ramadan is a time of reflection, sacrifice, and unity. Seeing a company like Orange Sierra Leone join us, serve alongside us, and share in this sacred moment strengthens our belief in the power of togetherness. We are deeply grateful.”

The Jamah Sunakati initiative highlights Orange Sierra Leone’s broader commitment to social cohesion and community development. By aligning its outreach with the spiritual and cultural significance of Ramadan, the company has reinforced its role not only as a service provider but as a partner in national progress and unity.

Commenting on the initiative, the Head of Strategic Marketing and Communication at Orange Sierra Leone, Philip Emeh, emphasized the importance of meaningful engagement during the holy month:

“Ramadan teaches us the values of compassion, generosity, and solidarity. At Orange Sierra Leone, we believe in standing with our communities not only through our products and services, but through actions that bring people together and uplift lives. It is an honour for us to share in these moments of reflection and unity.”

As Ramadan continues, the initiative serves as a reminder of the power of collective goodwill and the importance of nurturing connections across communities. Orange Sierra Leone has also extended its heartfelt wishes for a peaceful, blessed, and spiritually fulfilling Ramadan to all those observing.

Orange Foundation and UBA Foundation Partner to Rehabilitate York PHU Maternity Ward

By Foday Moriba Conteh

Orange Foundation Sierra Leone and the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Foundation on Tuesday, 3 February 2026, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to rehabilitate the maternity ward of the York Peripheral Health Unit (PHU), as part of efforts to reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths and improve access to quality healthcare.

The signing ceremony took place at the Orange Foundation Office in Hill Station, Freetown.

Director of Orange Foundation Sierra Leone, Ms. Annie Wonnie-Katta, described the partnership as a major milestone in strengthening maternal healthcare, noting that it builds on community-based interventions launched by the foundation in 2019. She said the MoU reflects a shared commitment to providing safe, dignified, and quality health services for women and newborns.

Country Director of Mama Pikin Foundation, Ms. Leeann Rizk, said the initiative would have a transformative impact on families, highlighting ongoing challenges faced by pregnant women. She noted that the delivery bucket and transport support programme costing about $10 per mother has supported over 20,000 women to opt for safe, facility-based deliveries. She also highlighted the Belleh Uman Bato Group (BBG) initiative, launched in 2023, which provides health education, emotional support, and community engagement, helping to rebuild trust in health facilities.

Chief Executive Officer of Orange Sierra Leone, Ms. Aicha Toure, said the partnership aligns with Orange Foundation’s long-standing commitment to maternal health, citing improvements in maternal mortality rates and increased safe deliveries supported by the project. She explained that the rehabilitation of the York PHU followed a 2025 assessment that identified key infrastructure gaps.

Managing Director of UBA Sierra Leone, Mr. Mohamed Alhajie Samoura, said the rehabilitation would include upgrades to maternity and postnatal wards, roofing, tiling, painting, and the provision of essential medical equipment, including oxygen resuscitation machines. He emphasized the role of the private sector in supporting sustainable development.

Minister of Health, Dr. Austin Demby, commended both foundations, noting Sierra Leone’s significant progress in reducing maternal mortality. He called for stronger public-private partnerships to achieve zero preventable maternal and child deaths and assured that the Ministry would provide the necessary personnel and technical support to ensure quality services at the York PHU.

The rehabilitation is expected to commence soon and is anticipated to significantly improve maternal healthcare delivery in the York community.

Seventy young women have been certified as digital professionals under the Orange Foundation Women’s Digital Centre programme on Friday, 11 February 2026, at the Orange Digital Centre in Freetown.

This event marked a significant milestone in Sierra Leone’s drive to close the gender gap in technology and strengthen its digital economy.

The graduation ceremony brought together senior government officials, corporate leaders, development partners, and families to celebrate the fifth cohort of the six‑month initiative.

In her remarks, the Director of Orange Foundation, Mrs. Annie Wonnie Katta, stated that since the launch of the programme in 2021, Orange Foundation has trained more than 700 women across Freetown, Bo, and Kenema, with over 600 graduates now entering the workforce equipped with practical digital and entrepreneurship skills.

She added that participants completed intensive training in computer applications, internet fundamentals, digital marketing, entrepreneurship, business management, and online brand development.

She further noted that the recent advanced cohorts have also received training in web development, 3D design, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.

Orange Sierra Leone CEO, Aicha Toure, underscored the urgency of expanding digital inclusion, noting that only 5.7 percent of women in Sierra Leone are online compared to 11.4 percent of men. She described the graduates as proof that targeted investment in women’s digital skills can drive inclusive economic growth and position women as creators, not just consumers, of technology.

Minister of Youth, Ibrahim Sannoh, reaffirmed government support for the initiative and announced plans to pursue formal accreditation of the programme through the National Council for Technical, Vocational and Academic Awards. He also challenged graduates to launch digital enterprises, pledging ministerial recognition for early‑stage innovators.

National Youth Commission Commissioner, Joseph Maada Lahai, emphasized that the programme aligns with the country’s Mid‑Term National Development Plan, which prioritizes technology and human capital development. He committed to supporting graduates through mentorship, internships, market access, and financing pathways.

Education officials highlighted broader policy reforms, including the establishment of technical universities offering Bachelor of Science degrees in technical fields, the development of a national cybersecurity curriculum, and the introduction of Sierra Leone’s first micro‑credential framework to formally recognize short‑course certifications.

Graduates and alumni shared testimonials of personal transformation, citing improved employability, income generation, and community impact.

Student representative Judith Ansu described the Digital Centre as “a gateway for ambition, confidence, and leadership,” reinforcing the programme’s role in advancing gender equality and national development.

As Orange Foundation and government partners deepen collaboration, the Women’s Digital Centre initiative stands as a scalable model for bridging the gender digital divide and building a more inclusive, innovation‑driven future for Sierra Leone.

Orange Sierra Leone Hosts Career Day at Methodist Girls' High School for 2024 Engagement Day

Orange Sierra Leone celebrated its annual Engagement Day on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at the Methodist Girls’ High School on Wilberforce in Freetown, as part of its company-wide initiative to give back to society. This event was organized under the theme of career development and education, with a focus on inspiring young girls to explore opportunities in technology and telecommunications.

The Methodist Girls’ High School was selected as the host institution following an internal voting process where Orange employees chose from a list of secondary schools previously engaged by the Orange Foundation. The event provided pupils with insights into Orange’s operations and career paths across various departments, including Strategy, Transformation, Marketing, IT, Customer Experience, Public Relations, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Speaking during the event, Ghina Wansa, Head of Strategy, Transformation, and Performance Management at OSL’s Human Resources Department, highlighted the significance of the day:

"At Orange, we believe in giving back to the community. Engagement Day is about connecting with pupils to explore career opportunities and inspire them to consider paths in technology and telecommunications. We want to encourage young girls to see the vast potential in these fields and understand what it takes to work at a company like Orange."

She revealed that the event aimed to equip pupils with knowledge about careers beyond traditional roles. Wansa emphasized the importance of exposing students to the possibilities in technology and the fast-moving telecom sector, which is often underrepresented in career choices for young girls.

"Many pupils don’t fully grasp what working in the real-world entails. Our goal is to open their eyes to diverse career paths beyond the conventional ones like engineering and law, encouraging them to embrace opportunities in fields that are shaping the future," she added.

This event is one of many initiatives by Orange Sierra Leone aimed at bridging the gap between education and employment. While Methodist Girls' High School served as the host school this year’s engagement day, Wansa hinted at plans to expand the program to other schools, amplifying its impact across the country.

Finnah Mariama Stevens, Head of Coding at the Orange Digital Center and Manager at the Orange Foundation, explained that during the engagement the company introduced to the pupils services offered by the Orange Digital Center, a training hub dedicated to equipping young people with practical skills in technology and innovation.

Finnah Stevens highlighted the center's free programs, which include courses in software programming, web and mobile app development, and fabrication workshops aimed at fostering entrepreneurship.

"The Orange Digital Center is a space where young people can explore their ingenuity, develop tech skills, and even start entrepreneurial ventures," Stevens explained. "All our training programs are free, and we’re expanding to open two new centers in Bo and Makeni to ensure broader access across Sierra Leone."

In addition to technical training, Stevens emphasized the Orange Foundation's humanitarian focus, encouraging pupils to engage in community service to cultivate empathy and compassion.

Stevens urged pupils to research job trends and consider future workforce demands while planning their careers:

"Being in school is a great start, but it's important to think ahead. Research the market, look at job trends, and position yourself for opportunities in emerging fields," she advised.

She concluded by reiterating that upcoming centers in Bo and Makeni will allow more youths outside Freetown to access training opportunities, reflecting Orange’s commitment to scaling up its impact and reaching underserved communities.

Francess Kamara, pupils of the Methodist Girls High School, extended heartfelt appreciation on behalf of her colleagues to Orange Sierra Leone for their commitment to empowering young people and making us believe in our potential to contribute to national development, adding that the engagement day was not just informative but truly life-changing for many of us as it has served as an eye-opening experience that has inspired me and my fellow pupils to think deeply about our future career paths.

Before this event, I had a limited understanding of the opportunities available in the technology and telecommunications industries.

Hearing from Finnah Mariama Stevens and other representatives from Orange about the various fields within their company and the work of the Orange Digital Center made me realize that there are so many possibilities beyond the traditional careers we usually hear about.

What stood out most to me was the encouragement to follow our passions, not to fear making mistakes, and to think ahead about the future of work. This advice has given me the confidence to dream big and work hard to achieve my goals.

Additionally, the day featured a series of motivational talks by Orange staff from various departments, offering pupils a closer look at the corporate world and the skills required to thrive in it of which pupils also had the opportunity to ask questions about Orange and their career paths.

Orange Sierra Leone’s Engagement Day reflects the company’s broader commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, fostering a future where more young girls can envision and pursue careers in STEM and beyond. A Leone Hosts Career Day at Methodist Girls' High School for 2024 Engagement Day
